The paper focuses on the significance of the International Welding Engineer (IWE) in the construction of “New Engineering Discipline” and the “Excellent Engineer 2.0 Plan” in Chinese welding specialty higher education. It analyzes the challenges brought by the Washington Accord to the internationalization of engineering education in China

as well as the new requirements for engineering talent training proposed by the construction of “New Engineering Discipline” and the “Excellent Engineer 2.0 Plan”; introduces the characteristics of IWE training courses

including their internationalization

systematization

and engineering characteristics

as well as the alignment of their course content with the requirements of “New Engineering Discipline” construction; reviews the exploration and development process of Harbin Welding Technology Training Center and many welding specialty colleges and universities in China integrating IWE training into undergraduate teaching

and demonstrates the outstanding achievements in teaching reform; elaborates on the positive role of IWE training in helping the construction of “New Engineering Discipline” in welding specialty

especially in developing students’ engineering thinking
