The microstructure characteristics in weld metal and heat affected zone（HAZ） are described, and the toughening mechanism of weld metal is discussed from four aspects of cleanliness, alloying, refining and homogenizing. The development of special low phase transformation spot welding materials and the development of post welding treatment methods are also introduced.
